$50 million cancer center comes to North Carolina

It looks like a new $50 million cancer center will be coming to North Carolina soon, as the state legislature there just approved state funds to be allocated to a new cancer at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Whenever I see a new cancer center about to be constructed, the same question comes up in my mind: what are the deliverables for centers such as these? Patient care? Pure research? Cutting-edge genetic experiments? What?

It's not that I'm skeptical, but with very little having come from cancer research in the past compared against the earth-shattering amount of money given for the cause, one must ask the hard questions. I sincerely hope a brand new cancer center will provide world-class answers to the second-leading killer in the U.S., but I'll admit I'm not holding my breath.
