    Director's Comments: Heparin Safety

Listen to the NLM Director's Comments on Heparin Safety. The transcript is also available.

A medical mystery (why patients in several nations became ill or died after taking a widely used blood thinner) recently seemed closer to resolution — following some Congressional testimony by U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officials and two insightful studies. Eighty one Americans died and 785 persons had allergic reactions in winter 2007 through spring 2008 after receiving heparin, a blood thinner that prevents blood clots and is common in kidney dialysis...

The lymphatic system is a network of tissues and organs. It is made up mainly of lymph vessels, lymph nodes and lymph. Lymph vessels, which are different from blood vessels, carry fluid called lymph throughout your body. The lymphatic system collects excess fluid and proteins from body tissues and carries them back to the bloodstream. Edema, or swelling, may happen when there is an increase in the amount of fluid or because of a blockage in the lymphatic system. The accumulation of lymph is called lymphedema...

I'm dealing once again with cancer. This time a bone tumor in my head

During this last few months, Precious and my family found out that I had second caner tumor in my skull. It was bone tumor about the size of a small orange. I had the tumor removed from my neurosurgeon in SLC at Salt Lake Regional Hospital on April 14.

I was then in the hospital for about 3 days. I stayed in ICU for about 2 days. Then I came back home on Wednesday night that week. I was very tired from this operation and have been taking pain pills since I came back home.

    http://www.saltlakeregional.com/

Right now my family and I are preparing for my chemo. I'm going to have a PET scan on Tuesday at St.Lukes Cancer Center in Twin Falls and my doctor is is going to putting in a "port" for my chemo on Wednesday here in Burley. I'll update the blog as after my doctor's appointment's next week. Stay tuned.
