The U.S. Surgeon General recently urged more Americans to be aware of (and help prevent) deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolisms. Deep vein thrombosis (or DVT) occurs when a blood clot forms in a large vein. In serious cases, the clot sometimes breaks off and travels in the bloodstream to your lungs, which causes a pulmonary embolism.
